(From a Couple Who’s Been Two Years in a Row!)
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is one of the most magical events you can experience, but it also comes with some logistical challenges that can make or break your trip. After attending two years in a row, here’s everything we wish we had known before going!

1. Parking is a Nightmare – Plan Ahead!
If you’re driving, leave at least an hour earlier than you think you need to. Morning sessions get packed quickly, and traffic backs up fast.
🚗 Best tips for parking:✔ Use the Park & Ride shuttle system – It saves so much hassle and drops you off right at the event. Tickets sell out, so book in advance.✔ If driving yourself, get there EARLY. Plan to arrive at least an hour before the session starts.✔ Bring cash for parking. Some lots only accept cash, so come prepared.✔ Expect to walk. Even if you get parking, you’ll likely have a decent walk to the entrance.
2. There’s So Much More Than Just Balloons
Yes, the mass ascension of hundreds of hot air balloons is breathtaking, but there’s also so much more to see and do!
🎆 Other events to check out:✔ Glowdeo & Drone Light Shows – At night, balloons light up in sync, followed by a drone show and fireworks.✔ Chainsaw Wood Carving & Sculptures – Some of the most intricate woodwork you’ll ever see.✔ Live Music & Performances – Various acts perform throughout the day.✔ Tons of Food & Vendors – New Mexico food is amazing. Try the breakfast burritos!
3. Dress in Layers & Pack Smart
Albuquerque mornings are COLD, but once the sun is up, it warms up fast. Layers are key!
🧥 What to bring:✔ Warm layers (jackets, gloves, beanies) – It can be freezing before sunrise.✔ Sunscreen & sunglasses – The sun is brutal once it’s up.✔ Water & snacks – Concessions are pricey, and lines can be long.✔ Blanket or lawn chairs – You’ll want somewhere to sit while watching the balloons.✔ Cash & card – Some vendors and parking lots only take cash.
4. Be Ready for Altitude & Weather Changes
Albuquerque sits at over 5,000 feet above sea level. If you’re coming from lower elevation, take it easy, stay hydrated, and watch for altitude sickness. Weather can also change fast, and winds may cancel some launches.
5. Download the Official Balloon Fiesta App
This app gives real-time updates on balloon launches, event schedules, and weather delays. It’s a must-have to navigate the event smoothly.
6. Expect Crowds, But It’s Worth It
Over 800,000 people attend every year. It’s crowded, but the sheer magic of seeing hundreds of balloons lift off at sunrise makes it 100% worth it.
Final Thoughts: A Bucket List Experience
The New Mexico Hot Air Balloon Fiesta isn’t just another festival—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that truly feels like stepping into a dream. The sight of hundreds of colorful balloons floating against the desert sunrise, the energy of the crowd, and the incredible atmosphere make it worth planning an entire trip around. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning guest, this event will leave you in awe and keep you coming back for more. If it’s not on your bucket list yet, add it now—you won’t regret it! 🎈✨
